Hopes were high after the Laurel High School football team opened the 2009 season with a 2-1 record. By the time the Spartans played DuVal on Saturday, those hopes were already dashed. Laurel finished 3-7 after the 42-0 loss to the Tigers.

Two weeks that changed the Spartans' season stood out to coach Brian Moore. In the Oct. 10 game against Parkdale, senior tailback DeAnte Love fractured his ankle and missed the rest of the season. He was one of Laurel's top returning players after rushing for 853 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior.
