Fort Hill runs roughshod over Allegany on Homecoming

CUMBERLAND -- It was a day for tradition, pageantry, and celebration. It was a day for curious alumni to inspect the newly renovated Greenway Avenue Stadium. And of course, it was a day for good high school football.

Homecoming 2010 will also be a great day to remember for Dylan and Garrett Clay - twin brothers who led their Fort Hill Sentinels to a convincing 47-21 victory over the Allegany Campers.
Dylan Clay, who was awarded Player of the Game honors, rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown. Garrett finished with 97 yards and three touchdowns. (In retrospect, co- Players of the Game awards may have been more appropriate.)
"We expected to win today," said Garrett Clay. "Everyone came together as a team. We showed brotherhood out there".
Fort Hill started the game off on the wrong foot (pun intended), however. Cullin Brown's opening kickoff ricocheted off of an Allegany player and set the Campers up with excellent field position.
Allegany promptly marched down the field. Halfback Drew O'Neal plunged in from a yard out to put the Campers on top 7-0.
Fort Hill wasted little time responding, however. Jaron Watkins blasted through the Camper wedge and returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 7-7.
"Jaron is a big play waiting to happen. He's a playmaker," said Dylan Clay. "That touchdown set the tone for the entire game."
After an exchange of possessions, Allegany again got a short field to work with when Fort Hill muffed the snap on a punt attempt. That gave the ball back to the Campers on the Sentinels' 10-yard line. O'Neal soon followed with another 1-yard touchdown run, although the extra point was blocked and Allegany led 13-7.
A few series later, Fort Hill was on the move deep in Allegany territory. But Garrett Clay fumbled and the Campers recovered on their own 9. Allegany picked up a couple of first downs before Campers quarterback Carter Imes attempted a pass while under extreme pressure. He threw the ball up for grabs and Garrett Clay came down with the interception, making up for his earlier miscue.
Fort Hill didn't waste their good fortune. Dylan Clay exploded down the sideline for a 34-yard touchdown run, giving the Sentinels a 14-13 halftime lead.
Allegany kicked off to begin the third quarter, and the Sentinels special teams again made their move. Lance Fullwood returned the kick 62 yards to the Allegany 18. Garrett Clay ran four straight times, eventually scoring on a 7-yard run to put Fort Hill ahead 21-13.
Allegany's next drive came to an end when Sentinels lineman Wesley Wills recovered a fumble on the Camper 23.
"Our defense played much better in the second half," said Fort Hill coach Todd Appel. "We played very sound and we used our speed to our advantage."
Appel had a few offensive tricks up his sleeve, too. Dylan Clay took the reigns at quarterback -- Fort Hill's version of the Wildcat. The strategy proved to be effective, and the drive culminated in a Garrett Clay 5-yard touchdown run.
"We have speed and we thought the Wildcat was something that we would try, and it certainly worked for us today." said Appel. "We made adjustments at halftime. Sometimes we don't show everything we have in the first half because we didn't want to give then the opportunity to make adjustments."
The Wildcat worked again on Fort Hill's next possession. Dylan Clay handed off to Watkins who sprinted for a 33-yard touchdown.
"They didn't have an answer for the Wildcat," said Dylan Clay. "We worked really hard at practice on the Wildcat formation - and it paid off."
Fort Hill led 34-13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter and tacked on another score on a Garrett Clay 68-yard touchdown run.
Later on, with Fort Hill comfortably ahead by 20 points, the Sentinels inserted back-up quarterback Mike Austin (a transfer from Boonsboro), who operated out of a double-wide spread formation. Austin completed a 51- yard touchdown pass to Robert Vincent, setting the final score at 47-21.
(The touchdown pass was uncharacteristic for a Sentinel squad that usually prefers to keep the ball on the ground. A few Allegany fans speculated that the pass was pay back for a late Camper touchdown in last year's 35-14 playoff victory over Fort Hill.)
"We knew we could have lost today and backed into the playoffs, but we didn't want to do it that way," Appel said. "We wanted to eliminate them and move on."
Allegany is indeed eliminated. Fort Hill is the No. 2 seed in the 1A West Region and will face a feisty Smithsburg team next week at Greenway.
