Good Counsel finishes No. 1 in Maryland
After Week 10, little did we know that the top four was virtually set.
For the first time in the 23-year history of the Maryland Media High School Football State Poll, the teams ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 after Week 10 all ended up winning championships and holding those same positions in the final ranking of the season.
WCAC champ Good Counsel collected every first-place vote to finish out a second straight state No. 1 ranking. MIAA A champ Gilman gathered every second-place vote en route to a No. 2 finish. The swing result was Good Counsel's 20-19 overtime win over Gilman early in the season.
Class 4A champ Wise ended at No. 3, followed by Class 3A champ River Hill at No. 4. DeMatha, which gave Good Counsel a run for the WCAC crown, ended up fifth, followed by Middletown, Calvert Hall, Quince Orchard, Westminster and Huntingtown.
The main reason why the top four from past Week 10 rankings have never all gone on to win championships and hold that order is due largely to matchups. Historically, the top four has been comprised of multiple teams from either the WCAC, MIAA, Class 4A or Class 3A -- guaranteeing that some team would lose. Such was not the case in 2012 with four teams from different leagues and classes.
